We live under a delusion that we inhabit a democracy, whereas in fact we live in a state as dictatorial as Mugabe’s Zimbabwe. The difference is that there is no mad ostentatious despot with his portrait on the bank-notes. Instead there is a small clique made up of senior civil servants and businessmen, many of whom are members of either Opus Dei or the Knights of St Columbanus, and just to give an ecumenical veneer to things maybe the odd Freemason and Orangeman. They have an almost unnatural obsession with control. They ensure that the best jobs go to family members and the sons and daughters of their friends. It would be so easy to dismiss me as a mad and embittered conspiracy theorist wouldn’t it.
